How to Host a Successful Garage Sale Before Moving Day

Getting rid of junk is one of the hardest parts of moving. It’s much easier, though, if you can make some money while doing it. Many people choose to have garage sales to clear out their home before a move, but they don’t always do it correctly. Below are a few tips to follow for a successful pre-moving sale.

Time it Right

One of the best ways to ensure that your garage sale is successful is to hold it at the right time. While people have successful sales throughout the year, there are a few rules you should follow. Always make sure your sale starts early during the day, that at least one day of the sale falls on a weekend, and that it’s not being held at the same time as another important event in your town. While you have a limited amount of time to have a garage sale before moving, you should still be able to find a time in line with everything mentioned above.

Advertise!

Advertising is everything when it comes to a garage sale. While you can certainly count on some traffic from those who drive around looking for deals, you want to draw in as many people as possible. As a rule, you’ll probably need about fifteen to twenty signs placed in and around your neighborhood. It’s also a good idea to put information up elsewhere. Post on the yard sale category of Craigslist if possible and check to see if your local paper will let you run a cheap ad.

Pricing Practice

If you need to get rid of items before you move, you need to price everything to sell. This means worrying less about making money and more about getting things gone. As a rule, you’ll want to try to make at least enough to have a junk service come and haul away everything that’s left. If your items aren’t selling early on, be prepared to drop the price. Most people who come to a sale will also like to haggle, so be willing to drop your prices if they will take more items off your hands.

Be Prepared

Finally, you’ll want to go into the whole process prepared. Get enough price stickers, change, and bags to deal with the mother of all sales. Put in some effort to secure a good space and be prepared to move everything inside if the weather turns. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, make sure you have a plan to deal with the leftovers. This might mean packing away what’s left in a truck to go to a charity or taking it to the dump, but you will almost certainly need to get rid of what didn’t sell before you move.

A good garage sale can still be the best way to make room in your moving truck.  Make sure to prepare well, advertise, price fairly, and to start the sale on the right day. With a little preparation, you can get rid of your unwanted goods and make a little money for your new place.
